Leather Motorcycle Get-Back Whips

Motorcycle Handlebar Whips — Leather Get-Backs for the Road

What is a Motorcycle Whip — and Why Riders Use It
A motorcycle whip (also known as a “get‑back whip”) is a braided leather or paracord accessory that hangs off the brake or clutch lever of a motorcycle.Though today it’s mostly a styling piece, it has roots in biker culture and offers practical benefits too.

What it is
Typically 24–48 inches long, made of braided leather or paracord
Attached to the handlebars via a quick‑release “panic snap” or similar clasp
Often ends in tassels, fringe or a decorative weighted ball
In modern form, more used for decoration, identity and visibility rather than actual whipping

Why riders use a motorcycle whip
Here are the main reasons riders choose to attach one:

Visibility & safety The movement and length of the whip help attract attention to the bike, making it easier for other motorists to notice you
In low‑light or heavy‑traffic conditions, something that moves and catches the eye can boost safety
Style, identity and culture Many riders use whips to show off their personal style, match bike colors, or reflect motorcycle club (MC) affiliation and tradition
It’s also a nod to biker history and camaraderie: whips were once practical tools among club members and now serve as a culture marker
Tradition & symbolism The whip holds symbolic weight—it can signal the freedom of the open road, or a rider’s membership in a biking community
Historically, some whips were designed for quick‑release self‑defense or signalling, though that use is much less common today

A few things to keep in mind
While mostly decorative today, in some jurisdictions the type of whip or how it’s used could raise legal issues (especially if it resembles or is used as a weapon). Always check your local laws
Make sure the whip doesn’t interfere with proper operation of your bike (levers, controls, braking) or get caught in moving parts. Safety first.
If you’re using it mainly for visibility, choose styles and lengths that complement your ride without becoming a hazard.

Adding a well‑chosen get-back whip can make your ride stand out, express your biker identity, and enhance your presence on the road — all while staying true to the legacy of the get‑back whip.
