The Ultimate Fit & Sizing Guide: How to Properly Fit a Motorcycle Vest
Getting the right fit on a motorcycle vest is completely different from buying a standard fashion vest or jacket. Whether you are layering it over a heavy-duty riding jacket for early spring and late fall or wearing it over just a t-shirt in the dead of summer, getting the sizing right the first time keeps you comfortable on the highway and saves you the hassle of returns.
The Golden Rule to keep in mind right off the bat: Quality leather tends to run small. Because genuine leather is structured and designed to mold to your body over time, sizing up or choosing the right adjustable style is essential.
Here is a step-by-step breakdown of how to measure for and fit a motorcycle vest correctly.
Step 1: Decide How You Plan to Wear It
Before you even pick up a tape measure, ask yourself one crucial question: Are you wearing this vest over your riding jacket, or underneath/on its own?
-
Over a Jacket: If you plan to wear your vest over a leather or textile riding jacket, you will typically need to size up by 1 to 2 sizes depending on how thick your jacket's armor and insulation are.
-
On Its Own / Over a Shirt: If you wear it over a standard t-shirt, hoodie, or riding shirt, remember that heavy motorcycle leather has a snug, athletic cut. If you fall between sizes or prefer a bit more breathing room, sizing up is usually the safest bet.
Step 2: Consider Adjustable Styles (Like Side-Lace Vests)
If you want flexibility in your fit, or if you plan on swapping between wearing your vest over a thin shirt in the summer and a thick hoodie in the cooler months, look for a side-lace vest.
-
The Benefit: Leather side laces allow you to expand or tighten the torso width by a couple of inches on the fly.
-
The Look: It gives you a customizable, tailored fit while accommodating seasonal layering changes without needing to buy two different sizes.
Step 3: Take Accurate Measurements
Grab a flexible soft measuring tape and have a buddy help you if possible:
-
Chest / Bust: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, right under the armpits. Stand naturally and breathe normally, don't puff out your chest or suck it in.
-
Waist / Torso: Measure around your waistline or right across your belt line, keeping in mind where the bottom hem of the vest will sit when you are seated on your bike. (If you are looking at a side-lace vest, your waist measurement helps you dial in how much you'll want to open up the side laces).
Step 4: Check Key Fit Areas
Once you try on a vest, check these three critical areas to ensure it fits properly:
-
The Shoulders & Collar: A proper riding vest should sit flat across your shoulders without gaping or pinching at the neck. If you chose a club-style vest with a short European collar, it should sit comfortably against your throat without riding up into your chin when you lean forward into a riding position.
-
The Length: A good vest should fall right at your belt line or slightly below. If it is too long, the bottom hem will bunch up and push the vest upward when you straddle your motorcycle seat. If it's too short, it will ride up awkwardly over your torso.
-
Mobility & Closure: Fasten the front snaps or zipper. You should be able to cross your arms comfortably without straining the seams or fabric. If you are wearing a snap-front vest, it should close securely without gaping open in the wind.
